I am an artist and investigator. I use photography as a means of gathering
evidence that explores the conventions and rituals that prevent us from embracing
the notions of impermanence and imperfection that pervade our existence.

Found this unusual memorial in Phippsburg, Maine on Route 209 on the way to Popham Beach. A little digging led me to another photographer's rendering of the marker and some interesting information in his comments. Also, here's a link to DownEast magazine's take on how Mr. Morason/Morrison arrived at his final roadside resting place.

Gathering Dust
"We drove past a fireworks warehouse the size of a cathedral, and at least three bundles of fatality markers: small white crosses and plastic flowers gathering dust on the side of the road."
Dark Places, Gillian Flynn, © 2009
The term "fatality marker" was new to me and led to an internet search revealing a fair amount of discussion about the difference between a roadside marker vs. a memorial. An American Legion program in Montana is outlined here. RoadsideAmerica.com has a story about a variety of memorials/markers. And, this article talks about Florida's approach to fatality markers and safety.
Maybe time to plan a road trip?

Another from the series documenting roadside memorials. Taken on the Mohawk Trail in Charlemont, this image might work for base camp photo's Celebrate the Mohawk Trail at 100 – Photo Contest & Exhibit.
